ATU students, faculty, alumni, and basketball supporters were treated to an opening night of fun and competition to celebrate the upcoming basketball season with Night One at Tucker.
This pep rally-type event was started last year and created to hype up the Wonder Boys and Golden Suns basketball teams for their upcoming seasons. This successful event allowed supporters to see both teams in action, as well as participate in fun activities for a chance to win prizes. A common crowd favorite being a red parking pass, allowing the receiver to park anywhere on campus, except for disabled or reserved parking.
Both teams competed in a game of knockout, with the Golden Suns winning. The Wonder Boys participated in a dunk contest, judged by President of the University, Dr. Russell Jones.
The event also featured performances from the cheer squad and dance team, a spirit award given to the most spirited group (the softball team), and a special guest appearance by Jerry the Bulldog.
While the festivities were enjoyed by many, listeners were left with melancholy news that the Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Mark Downey, will be retiring at the end of the season.
Both teams kick off their seasons on Nov. 14, with the Golden Suns at home and the Wonder Boys at Missouri Southern State University.
