The Arkansas Tech University Department of Music held a wind ensemble concert at Witherspoon Auditorium on Oct. 5. The concert was titled “Elements,” and was conducted by Daniel A. Belongia. Other performers include Amy Porter as Soprano, TJ Perry on trumpet, and Pheobe Robertson on flute.
The first piece of the concert was from Re(new)al by Viet Cuong, with backing from percussionist Cory Fica, Emanuel Chambers, Kraigen Partee, and Miguel Diaz-Moreno. The second set of pieces were from Winter Morning Walk. Their titles were “Perfectly Still This Solstice Morning,” “Walking by Flashlight,” and “How Important It Must Be.” These were all composed by Maria Schneider. As previously mentioned, Soprano Porter was the soloist for these pieces.
The third piece was from River of Time (Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble) titled “Crossing” and composed by David Biedenbender. Each piece was soloed by TJ Pery on the trumpet with a singing play style.
The fourth Piece came from Mnicakmun – Sounds of Water. The titles were “Mnicasniyanyanla” (Rippling Water), “Mnicaluza” (Rapid Water), and “Miohuta” (The Shore). This set of pieces was accompanied by Phoebe Robertson on flute solo. The piece used two plastic tubes of water to simulate running water as an effect.
The last piece performed was “The Frozen Cathedral,” composed by John Mackey for a friend who had lost their son as a tribute. The piece was played in darkness with the screen lowered for a show of scenery to honor the piece and tribute.
