The ATU Golden Suns had their first home volleyball match on Thursday, Sept. 25. They were able to beat the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms three sets to zero.
The Golden Suns dominated in every area of the match. During the first set, the girls rushed out to a 6-0 lead and won the set 25-6. UAM was only able to muster three kills while ATU had 16.
The second set was a bit more competitive, but ATU rallied to win. UAM was able to hang around until the middle of the set where the score was 13-11. ATU then went on a five-point scoring run to push it to 18-11 and eventually took the set.
The third and final set was similar to the second one, however UAM put up even more of a fight. With a final score of 25-20, the Golden Suns were able to take the sweep against the Cotton Blossoms.
Throughout the match the Golden Suns were able to get several key blocks against the Cotton Blossoms, which stifled any kind of momentum that UAM tried to gather. This was a key statistic as UAM didn’t register a single block, while the Golden Suns had five total in the match.
The unsung hero of the match was defensive specialist Samantha Wojtowicz. She did her job getting digs whenever UAM attempted to get a rally going.
The Golden Suns are currently undefeated in conference play and have a crucial match coming up on Tuesday, Sept. 30th against Ouachita Baptist University. Both teams are coming into the match undefeated in conference, and whoever wins will be in the driver’s seat come seeding in the conference tournament. The first serve will be at 6 p.m.
