The men of Arkansas Tech University put their best foot forward to kick off ATU’s Women’s Week with the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event.

As the men donned their red stilettos, they were led by Laken Rudelis, who serves as the educational events chair for the Student Activities Board, from the Hindsman Bell Tower towards McEver. After rounding the building, they continued their trek across Baz-Tech and strode past Dean. A spirit tunnel of the women and supporters gathered, welcoming them back as they made the home stretch from the steps of the Ross Pendergraft Library back to the Bell Tower.

The event was held at the Hindsman Bell Tower on Monday, March 4 and was coordinated by Megan Bell, coordinator for Civic & Community Engagement and Student Leadership Development. To kick off the walk, Amy Pennington, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students & Title IX Coordinator, and Bryce Smith, vice president of the Interfraternity Council, offered words of encouragement and inspiration about their motivations and beliefs surrounding the fight against domestic violence and violence against women.

Hannah Stone, president of the Student Government Association, also offered an impactful speech about her motivations to continue the fight against violence against women.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes was founded in 2001, and since then, men all over the world have come together to walk in support of ending sexualized violence against women. The event was introduced to ATU in 2015 and has been a pillar of Women’s Week ever since.

“I have been raised by women pretty much my entire life,” Charles Moton said. “Being born in a household where I did not have a father figure and being raised by my mom, granny and two aunts really makes a difference. I am always going to stand with women in solidarity, for women, forever.”
