The Arkansas Tech University Student Government Association (SGA) opened their weekly meeting on Sept.10 with excitement about the first football tailgate of the semester, which was set for Sep. 11th. Students can look forward to chicken taquitos at the tailgate event.

In addition to food and festivities, SGA members explored the latest ideas to enhance the game day experience. Suggestions included creating a student section highlight video for campus life promotions and extending the tailgate into the stadium.

One highlight of the meeting was the announcement that SGA President, Carson Smith, would be receiving the prestigious National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Rising Star Award, a recognition of outstanding leadership and campus involvement. This honor, which is considered one of the most notable awards for student leaders, will be presented in October at the NASPA conference in St. Louis.

The association also heard several constituent concerns from students. Issues included a hole near the softball field, a broken streetlight across the street from Renew, and fading signage in the Baswell parking lot. These have been recognized by the SGA and are planned to be fixed over the fall break. On the dining side, students requested more variety in the cafeteria, specifically asking for international cuisine to be featured twice per week.

SGA meetings are held every Wednesday at noon in Doc Bryan 242. For more information regarding SGA contact President Carson Smith at csmith209@atu.edu.
