The Golden Suns basketball team played against Southeastern Oklahoma on Thursday, Feb. 1. Beginning with an unfortunate start to their first game of their weekend in Oklahoma, the Golden Suns were only seven points away from victory, with a score of 64-57.

The game began as a back and forth match, taking turns with the lead. By halftime, Savage Storm had grabbed the lead with a score of 28-21.

ATU did not stand for this, rendering Southeastern scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter. This allowed them to take the lead, but not for long. The quarter continued with another back and forth match of stealing the lead with neither team more than four points ahead.

With 46 seconds left, the Savage Storm scored a three pointer, knocking the Golden Suns’ lead from four points to only one. The third quarter ended with a score of 42-41, ATU just barely scraping by with the lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Savage Storm went on a rampage, scoring 13 points in the next three minutes, not allowing the Golden Suns to get a point in. ATU attempted a comeback but Southeastern fit in a few late free throws, finishing the game with their seven point lead.

Junior Dana Thompson, #22, scored about 30 percent of the points with 17 of the 57 under her belt. In close-second, #25, junior Alex Hill, had 26 percent with 15 points. The last player to reach double digits was #23, sophomore Hayleigh Wyrick, with 21 percent and 12 points.

The Savage Storm doubled the Golden Suns’ bench points with a total of 24. This as well as their 19 points off turnovers proved to hurt the Golden Suns. Southeastern beat ATU in field goals, although barely, making .1 percent more than ATU.

Southeastern took and made more shots than ATU. The Golden Suns continued their weekend in Oklahoma and will continue to try to bounce back from this loss.
