On Oct. 4, the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys played the Southeastern Oklahoma Savage Storm. While both defenses put up a fight, the Wonder Boys found a way in the fourth quarter to take home the win with a score of 14-10.
Due to the hardy defenses, the first three quarters were relatively calm. Savage Storm was able to score, taking the lead before halftime. The lead increased to 0-10 at the start of the fourth quarter; however, this is where ATU gained an advantage and did not look back.
The comeback was started by an interception from defensive back Trey Howard, #20, on the first play of the fourth quarter. Shortly after, ATU was on the scoreboard, making it 7-10.
SEOSU was able to secure first downs and move the chains. The big play on this drive happened on third-down with the ball on SEOSU’s 22-yard line. They needed eight yards to keep their possession, but luckily for them, their play went all the way down to ATU’s 22-yard line. This pass play went for 42 yards and could have been the biggest play of the game for either team. However, SEOSU faced another tough play—they needed five yards for a touchdown. They attempted the play, but the Wonder Boys defense was able to stop them and force a turnover.
While working the clock and driving the ball down the field, ATU called four straight-run plays that ended up earning them 20 yards. Switching things up, quarterback Jack Dawson, #5, was able to connect on a 46-yard pass to wide-receiver Scout Brazeal, #15.
ATU was able to take advantage of the opportunity and got a touchdown thanks to quarterback Dominic Feliciano, #13. Kicker Logan Tymeson, #41, was able to add an extra point and give the Wonder Boys the 14-10 lead.
With a little over three minutes left in the game, ATU’s defense was tested one last time. SEOSU was able to get the ball into the red zone (20-yards within the end zone), but ATU’s defense stood strong. After numerous incomplete passes from SEOSU, ATU was able to stop them on fourth-down with 36 seconds left on the clock. The Wonder Boys were able to run the clock and secure the victory with a final score of 14-10.
The Wonder Boys will hit the road for their next game against the East Central Tigers in Ada, Oklahoma on Oct. 11. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Koi-Ishto Stadium.
